Annual hazardous household waste collection is slated for Saturday, May 7 at Daniel Boone High School. Got junk? Afraid to put it in the regular trash because it might be hazardous? It’s time to mark May 7 on your calendar.
That’s when the Washington County Solid Waste Department will collect household hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Daniel Boone High School, 1440 Suncrest Drive in Gray.
Please note this annual event, conducted in coordination with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, is moving from its location of recent years. The good news, Washington County Solid Waste Director Charles Baines says, is that people who mistakenly show up with regular household waste items will be just a short distance from Washington County’s Gray Convenience Center, which will accept those items.
“We’ve had great success with our hazardous waste collection in recent years, and we’re hoping that will continue at this new location,” Baines says. Last year, people from 675 households disposed of more than 17 tons of waste at the event’s former Johnson City location,” Baines said. “We appreciate Daniel Boone High School offering their facilities for this, and look forward to helping Washington Countians dispose of items that don’t need to be lying around people’s garages and basements and certainly don’t need to be dumped in regular landfill space.”
Those items include:
• Chemicals from the house
• Paint thinners, varnishes and stains
• Pesticides
• Pool chemicals
• Flammables
• Fertilizers
• Insecticides
The event is designed for households only, and no commercial, business or institutional waste will be accepted. This event will not accept medical waste, radioactive waste, tires or explosives.
Items that don’t fit into the hazardous category but are accepted at Washington County’s five convenience/recycling centers include: latex paint, batteries, electronic waste, oil and filters, and antifreeze.
